The month begins on a hilariously heartfelt note with A Real Pain, starring Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin, the Emmy-award-winning star of Succession. The film follows mismatched cousins who reunite to honour their late grandmother, and it made a huge splash when it premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. If you’re looking for something that’ll give you all the feels that same weekend, you’ll definitely want to check out Tom Hanks and Robin Wright’s newest film, Here, which sees them reunite on screen for the first time in thirty years. The star power continues the first weekend of November as Emilia Pérez, another TIFF 2024 crowd favourite, also hits theatres. Are you still looking for a thrill after Halloween? If so, Hugh Grant stars in his most ambitious role yet! Heretic follows two missionaries who find themselves trapped and under the control of a dangerous man with a particular affinity for Blueberry Pie. While the two couldn’t be further from each other personality-wise, this commemorative trip will bring them closer than they’ve ever been. Now, the three are teaming up again for Here (2024), a cinematic and visual feat that travels across generations and takes place entirely in one family’s living room. This incredibly touching and romantic film follows Hanks and Wright through the years, starting as high school sweethearts before having a family and eventually growing old together. With Robin Wright and Tom Hanks specifically, this project was the first time the two have worked together since Forrest Gump, which was released in theatres 30 years ago. When asked about what it was like working with Wright again in an interview with Deadline, Hanks said they “slipped right back into their onscreen chemistry” for Here. Mr. Reed is an eccentric and diabolical man who forces two young missionaries (Thatcher and East) into a game of cat and mouse that will be the ultimate test of their faith. This new nightmare comes from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, also known as the geniuses who created the A Quiet Place franchise, but the two concepts couldn’t be more different. While the A Quiet Place franchise explores a world-ending event, Heretic is a contained thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat until its last frame. Audiences who saw the film when it had its world premiere at this year’s TIFF praised the cast’s performances, eerie atmosphere and unrelenting suspense. It begins with the long-awaited adaptation of the beloved children’s book series from the 1970s that has filled families with joy for generations. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever was written by Barbara Robinson, an acclaimed children’s author known for this series of books. The story follows the Bradleys, a close-knit family whose lives go from calm to chaotic when they become intertwined with the Herdmans– another family with six of the most challenging children in the history of the world. When Grace Bradley (Greer) is selected to direct her Church’s 75th Annual Christmas Pageant, her job is made much more difficult when the Herdman children decide to sign up to be in this year’s pageant. With pressure from the Church to kick out the children, Grace must teach the community to open their hearts to the true meaning of Christmas. According to director Dallas Jenkins, the snow-filled movie was filmed in Canada last winter to get that timeless classic Christmas movie look he envisioned for the film. Jenkins also discusses how much Robinson’s source material means to him, as he and his family fell in love with the book nearly two decades ago. With so much love and care clearly put into making The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, this will surely be one of the most uplifting movies to come out during the holidays.
